I wanted to share a fun little project we recently wrapped up for the British Museum Shop. We got the chance to work on some double-sided stickers for a Peter Rabbit toy display, and it was such a blast! Let me take you through the journey of how these adorable stickers came to life.
Printing double-sided stickers isn’t your run-of-the-mill task. The main challenge is ensuring perfect alignment so that both sides match up flawlessly. This was a breeze using our HP 800W with its white ink and multilayered “sandwich printing” abilities. Here’s a quick rundown of the process:
- Material Selection: We chose a durable, high-quality vinyl that’s both vibrant and long-lasting. Since these stickers would be part of a display, they needed to withstand some handling.
- Printing Technique: The magic lies in the precision. The printer uses a technique known as “sandwich printing” where the design is printed in up to five layers onto a transparent adhesive sheet in just one pass. This way, there’s no risk of the designs not aligning.
- Cutting and Quality Check: Once printed, the stickers were CAD cut on our Summa tangential knife cutter. This automated system looks for location marks left by the printer and then uses the Vector information held in our print files to perfectly cut the double sided vinyl to shape.
The stickers were then applied to the inside of a clear acrylic display case which was supplied by the customer.
So, next time you’re at the British Museum, swing by the shop and check out the display. And if you happen to grab a rabbit or two, just know that a lot of love and creativity went into making that eye catching piece of magic.
Unfortunately we were not allowed to keep the giant cuddly rabbit.
